How to effectively spring clean your space
Spring is in the air and it’s a great time to spring clean your house. Right now, more than ever you may be inclined to give your home the love it needs. For several weeks, many of us have been impacted by the stay at home orders. A lot of us have been given something normally we do not have— time! You may wonder who feels like decluttering at a time like this. Decluttering is an amazing stress release tool that can get your mind off things.
Take a visual walkthrough of your home. Make a note of the top 3 areas in need of your TLC. Be careful, do not overwhelm yourself. Let’s take baby steps because the whole point is that you start and finish.
Let’s find 3 spaces that would take you approximately 2-3 hours to complete! Once you find those areas follow these steps to walk you through it:
Step 1: Remove items and clean.
Look at your area to have a successful ending. Remove all items except furniture unless it’s old, tattered, and apart of the donation/ throw away or giveaway process.
The reason: the only way you will truly see what you need to get rid of is to remove all the items to see what you have.
Once you remove everything if it’s an area that you need to clean by all means clean it thoroughly so that your space gets a fresh clean feel. Let’s set the atmosphere!
Step 2: Sorting
I’m so proud of you because you made that first step is challenging; however you tackled it like a pro and now that everything is out it's time to start sorting.
Sorting is making piles putting all like items in different piles. While you are doing this, you will have two other piles so get a sheet of paper and write on it “To Donate”, “To Toss it!” and “To Keep” piles.
After you sort all your like items you may start to see duplicates, things you haven’t utilized for months or years, etc!
Follow this to get you through:
If you no longer need it and it’s in great shape= Donate
If you haven’t used it because it’s damaged or no longer serves a purpose=Toss
If you have use of it and you love it =Keep
Be honest with yourself you’re the only one who knows how you feel about all 3 piles. The most important thing about this process is not to put everything back that you took out and just place it back neatly. The whole idea of decluttering is a removing process!
Now that you have done all your sorting and made tough decisions on what will stay or go— you’re almost halfway there!
Take a deep breath, come on inhale and exhale— let’s do this!
Step 3: Placement Time
It’s time to start putting everything that you decided to keep in its places. Remember I told you to put like items together those are categories and doing that step beforehand helps you to easily place everything!
Once you’ve placed everything- tell me honestly how does it feel? Does it feel better to know you’ve tackled something that normally you just didn’t have the time to do? I hope you will find it soothing and you feel accomplished. Now that you’ve decluttered, you now have a peaceful atmosphere in your space!
Don’t stop now. You got this. Continue the process. Please share your results. I would love to see how the project worked out!
